Y3W10 - Frankfurt/Mainz
The weeks of summer are rapidly slipping away it seems, so every nice (above 80 degree) day, we head to the pool. This week was no exception to that rule. We took advantage of the nice weather and spent an afternoon laying in the sun, and enjoying the freezing cold water. The not so nice days we spent cutting hair and a few more organization projects.
On the weekend we had the pleasure of finally catching up with some family friends in Frankfurt, the Dzmuras. We have been meaning to visit for the entire two years we have been here and finally made it happen. It was a really nice visit. I think the kids really enjoyed each others' company as well. They also have a store that had American things, and I'm embarrassed to say that we all looked like kids in a candy shop putting so many things into the basket. A few of my favorites were Hostess Ding Dongs, Spaghettios, Velveeta Shells & Cheese. I know that it is not the healthiest assortment, but fun having a few things we miss from home. Thanks again, Kim, for the hospitality.
On the way back from Frankfurt, we stopped in Mainz. It is the home of the Gutenberg Museum. We got to see some of the first printing presses and some of the "Gutenberg Bibles." The girls were a bit out-of-sorts, not wanting to go to a museum but we tried to explain the importance of the printing press - how and why it revolutionized life for the masses. It didn't really do that much for them at the moment, but hopefully later on in life they will realize how cool it was that we went, saw, and learned for ourselves.
One other highlight from the week was Bryn's building of the wood blocks. I took one look at her creation and said. "You built San Gimignano." She said, "These are just my towers." But, later in the week she kept bringing me to see her "San Nono" creations. Bailey also built the Tower Bridge, Big Ben, and the Tower of London. I have to say I think it is very cool that they have these places in mind when building. It is good to know that something is sticking with them when we are dragging them from place to place. Lleyton was doing his best Godzilla impression knocking the cities down as fast as they could build them. All good fun.
